Camden Place, at Chislehurst, Kent is a grade II* listed building which has, since 1894 housed Chislehurst Golf Club. The building is of great architectural and historic importance and is still being researched.
Dating from the early 18th century the house was transformed into a Georgian mansion by architects George Dance and designer James ‘Athenian’ Stuart. In the 1860’s it was refurbished as a French chateau, complete with a new dining room with panelling taken from the Chateau de Bercy. It has been described as the ‘probably the best French interior in England’. It was certainly a room fit for royalty and in 1870 became the home of the court of Napoleon lll in exile. He died at the house in 1873.
With stories of a double murder, Royal visitors and spies there is plenty to entertain you.
Camden Place is not open to the public but we are happy to arrange tours and talks for groups by arrangement.
We are members of Historic Houses and schedule events and visits through them as well as offering ‘open house’ tours on set dates and group visits by arrangement.
Numbers are limited so pre booking is necessary.
Our tours and talks last about 2 ¼ hours. They are led by guides who are all members of Chislehurst Golf Club.
We typically charge £12.50 per person for the tour which goes towards the conservation of our heritage.
