I joined Chislehurst Golf Club 16 years ago and my wife Maggie followed me a year later. It was a great decision. The golf hasn't improved too much but it has provided both of us with wonderful relaxation from busy lives and a social life and circle of friends whom we treasure dearly.

I was a civil servant for most of my working life, working in a range of Departments, including a spell as Head of John Prescott's office and finishing up as Director General for the Department of the Environment, Food and Agriculture. For the last four years I have been Chief Executive of an independent charity whose purpose was to help business and Government work together better and learn from each other.

Off the course I enjoy travelling, with a passion for Italy, hill walking, food and wine, and enjoying the family and grandchildren. And I'm one of a number of optimists in the club crossing our fingers that this is the year that Liverpool will finally claim the Premier League.

I'm delighted to be given the opportunity to captain the club. As we celebrate this anniversary year, Kath and I would love to encourage you all to enjoy your golf and make the most of the great social opportunities our wonderful club offers.

I became a member of Chislehurst Golf Club so long ago that I can't remember the exact date, hence our chosen charity Alzheimers!

I started my working life out as a teacher and after realising I wasnt compatible with children I moved on to working with adults, which presented a different set of challenges. After working in marketing for some 30 years, I hung up my boots recently thinking I would focus on improving my golf technique. Sadly my golf swing still resembles my hockey swing - the only difference is that I dont have to run down the fairway to take my next shot!

When not playing golf I have been known to take the occasional stroll - at one time finding myself on a route through the Pyrennees! I play tennis at a local club and cycle whenever possible, although my new address means cycling up either Summer Hill or Old Hill, so if you see me in a speed wobble, give me a wide berth!

It is a great privilege to have been asked to be Lady Captain particularly in the Club's 125 Anniversary Year. I am looking forward to working with Peter, the Board and Committees (and anybody else I can rope in) for what I hope will be an exciting and enjoyable year for all our members, both on and off the golf course.
